- Each
week we try to include training announcments from academies and
training organizations.
This week we want to
announce that the Florida's Criminal Justice Standards and Training
Commission, in conjunction with the Florida Department of Law
Enforcement, is sponsoring a High
Liability Trainer's Conference to be held in August of
2007.
The intent of the High Liability Conference is to bring criminal
justice instructors who teach the "hands on" high liability areas,
through in-service programs or academy basic recruit programs, together
to discuss issues relevant to high liability instruction.
This year Florida will be accepting out-of-state registrations for
attendance at the conference. The registration fee for the conference
is $200.00 per out-of-state applicant. Pre-registration is required and
is based on a first-come, first-serve basis to the first 100
individuals who register from out-of-state and submit the $200
registration fee.
The 100 openings will be available to individuals from other states who
are instructors or coordinators in the high liability areas at a state
P.O.S.T., or a criminal justice training facility. Registrations from
out-of-state will also be accepted from individuals who instruct
in-service training programs at a criminal justice agency.

Southwest
Law Enforcement Academy, located in Bristol, VA will be conducting two
great in-service training courses. The first is the John E. Reid &
Associates, Street Crimes Seminar which will be conducted
April 23 – 25, 2007.
This program details a series of investigative techniques that will
help any street cop more effectively resolve investigations, including
how to conduct effective street interviews; collect intelligence;
develop reliable informants; conduct undercover operations; secure
confessions; and, a discussion of lifesaving issues for officers on and
off-duty. The cost for this course is $395 and you can register
on-line. The enrollment website is:
http://streetcrimes.net/register_online.html
The second course is Verbal Judo and it will be conducted June 28-29,
2007.
Verbal Judo is the only tactical communications course in
America. The principles and tactics taught enable graduates to use
“presence and words” to calm difficult people who
may be under severe emotional or other influences, redirect the
behavior of hostile people, diffuse potentially dangerous situations,
perform professionally under all conditions and achieve the desired
outcome in the encounter. The non-member agency fee is $250 and you can
register by contacting the academy. For more information, contact:
(276) 645-3700 or email Doug Cooley at doug@swlea.org
Finally, I want to announce the 2007
Mid-Atlantic DUI Conference in Virginia Beach, VA that
will be conducted March 19-21, 2007.
Topics to be addressed are multi-jurisdictional checkpoints,
SFST’s, media relations role in traffic safety, review of DUI
programs on a local level, and more. A non-refundable
registration fee of $50.00 is due upon registration.
A special hotel room rate has been negotiated with Holiday Inn
– Surfside for $69.95 per night, plus tax. Reserve your room
early by calling 800-810-2400 and tell them you are attending the DUI
Conference.
You may find additional information about the conference at: www.vbgov.com/dui
or by email: duiconf@vbgov.com.
The direct number is 757-385-4606, then press 0.

User's Tip
Many of the
videos that you download from the internet require the use of Apple's
Quicktime Viewer to view the movie. If you are still having problems
after you install Quicktime on your computer, you may need to download
the ActiveX control that is required to play movies directly from your
browser.
Just visit http://snipurl.com/qtime.
When the dialog box pops up asking
if you want to install QuickTime ActiveX control, click Accept to
install the control. After the installation, you will be able to view
QuickTime movies from inside your browser.

User's Tip
If you are using
your own DV camcorder with iChat AV, you can use it to play
pre-recorded video tapes to the person with whom you are chatting. Just
set your camera to "video playback" and hit the play button. The small
inset picture will display your movie and the main picture will display
the person with whom your are chatting. This is a great way to let the
grandparents view home movies of the new baby.
