User's Tip
In the past we have talked about different file formats for your hard
drive. The NTFS format has several advantages over the Fat format,
particularly in the security area. So for the our PC user tip this
week, we are going to tell you how to convert a FAT partition to NTFS.
Before, I tell you how to do the conversion, I want to remind you that,
although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion
from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to do a full backup of the data
on the drive that it you are going to convert.
We also recommend that you verify the integrity of the backup before
proceeding and update your emergency repair disk.
Now on to the conversion. All you have to do is:
- Click '''START''', and then click '''RUN'''
- At the command prompt, type '''CONVERT [driveletter]:
/FS:NTFS'''
That is all there is to it. Convert.exe will
attempt to convert the
partition to NTFS.
- Mac
User's Tip
For our Mac User tip this week, we want to tell you about a quick way
to access various system preferences like the sound, display, and
keyboard. All you have to do is hold the option key while pressing one
of the function keys. This will bring up the system preferences dialog
for the selected function key.
For example, holding option while pressing the
“Volume
Up” function key will launch the System Preferences for
sound.
