Opportunities
- Each week we try to include
training announcment from an academy or training organization. This
week we want to announce three training opportunities.
The South
Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, located in Columbia, SC
will be conducting two great training sessions.
First is the 2006
Testing and Measurement Conference that will be held
November 6 - 9 at the South Carolina Educational Television Bank of
America Conference Center in Columbia, SC. The sixth annual conference
is designed for practitioners in the public safety arena involved with
training and education, officer selection, human resources, research
and development, and testing and measurement.
Next is the National
Leadership Summit that will be held January 15 - 17, 2007.
This summit is designed for any practitioner in the public safety field
that is involved with or has an interest in leadership
training/education. Topics include futures, competencies, best
practices, instructor credentialing, accountability and many others.
Presenters and panelists have been carefully chosen regarding their
experience and area of expertise. I will put a link to their website
where you will find additional information in the shownotes.
Finally, the Southwest
Law Enforcement Academy, located in Bristol, VA, will be
conducting a Basic
Patrol Rifle School that will be held September 6 - 8. The
fee is $150 and for more information contact the academy 276-645-3700.
- We welcome
training announcements from any criminal justice training academy or
training organization. Just send the information to talkback@copcast.net
and we will do our best to announce your training course.

User's Tip
Wikipedia defines
a mind map as a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other
items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or
idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure and classify ideas,
and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, and decision
making. Many of us have been using the mind mapping techniques for
years but now there is a free computer-based solution that gives your
project planning a bunch of new tools. Now you have a great
software program to do it called
FreeMind.
What is
FreeMind
good for?
- Keeping track of projects, including subtasks,
state of subtasks and time recording
- Project workplace, including links to necessary files,
executables, source of information and of course information
- Workplace for internet research using Google and other sources
- Keeping a collection of small or middle sized notes with
links on some area which expands as needed.
In addition to all these great uses, since the program is written using
Java, there are versions for computers running Windows, Mac or Linux so
everyone can share maps. I will put a link in the show notes.
- Mac
User's Tip
As long as your Finder
window is in icon view, you can add a photo as its background. You do
this by going under the View menu, under show View Options, and in the
background section (at the bottom of the dialog) choose Picture.
Click on the '''Select''' button and the standard Open dialog will
appear in which you can choose the image you’d like to appear
as the background of your window. Click '''OK''' and that image will
appear.
Note: This works only when viewing the window in icon view. if you
change to list view, the image will no longer be visible.
