User's Tip
For the PC user tip this week, I want to remind you about how using
keyboard commands can streamline your work flow. Let's start with your
browser. In Internet Explorer, use the F11 toggle to go full screen.
This gets all the other junk off the screen. You can also use the
Search panel to do your Web searches by clicking the magnifying glass
search toolbar button. You can easily check search results without
having to use the Back button.
Speaking of the Back button, don't bother moving the mouse up there to
click Back. Just press Alt + left arrow. The left- and right-arrow
buttons with Alt are the same as the Back and Forward buttons.
In most Microsoft applications, including Internet Explorer, F5 is the
"refresh" key. In Windows Mail, for example, pressing F5 sends and
receives all your mail, as long as the Inbox is highlighted. In IE, it
refreshes the page. In Windows Explorer, it updates the listing in a
window (to reflect the results of a file move, for example.
In Word, Excel, and many other applications, Ctrl + F6 is the key that
switches between open windows within the same app. No need to click on
the Window menu in the application and choose the document in question
-- just cycle through them with Ctrl + F6.
So instead of moving your hand and mouse around try keeping your hands
on the keyboard to increase your speed and improve your work flow.

User's Tip
For our Mac user
tip this week, I want to tell you about a little utility named
Applejack. It allows you to repair your disk, repair permissions,
validate the system's preference files, and get rid of possibly
corrupted cache files. The important thing is that you don't
need another startup disk with you. All you need to do is restart in
Single User Mode, by holding down the '''Command and S''' keys at
startup, and then typing '''applejack''';The important thing is that
you don't need another startup disk with
you. All you need to do is restart in Single User Mode (SUM), by
holding down the Command and S keys at startup, and
then typing
applejack; or applejack auto,
which will run through all the tasks
automatically; or applejack auto restart, which
will also restart the
computer automatically at the end of the process.
There are some warnings in the documentation so read through them
thoroughly before using on your system. This is an emergency repair
program and I really would not run it all the time, but it can save
hours of reinstallation. You can get it from the Kitchen Sink OSX
Diagnostics Folder or download it from
http://applejack.sourceforge.net.
